Summary: "PDR for Nutritional Supplements"

Very comprehensive, but omits some commonly used products, also lack of some detail pertaining to preparation and administration.

Summary: "Invaluable true reference, cutting through mountains of hype and propaganda."

I've got the first edition, and it's fantastic. Five stars are well earned. This book compiles tests from reputable, unbiased sources on popular supplements. Which is invaluable in a world where much of the "proof" of a supplements efficacy and side effects come straight from the manufacturer, and are often fabricated anecdotes and "tests" done under highly skewed conditions.

This book is quite technical, aimed more at those with a medical background than the end consumer. But it's an invaluable resource for those who want to actually know what a supplement does (or doesn't do.) Supplement buffs beware, the conclusions on many popular items boil down to "placebo at best." But there are a few confirmations of dietary supplement gems in there.

A must have reference for anyone using, or considering, supplementation.

Summary: "5 stars 5 stars 5 stars 5 stars 5 stars 5 stars 5 stars 5stars....? interesting."

how come every single review is 5 stars? and how come not one of these reviewers has written any other reviews on any other books, only this one? hmmm....

i haven't read this book. i am seeking information on the trustworthiness of supplement manufacturers. which brands use potent ingredients, and which brands do not have the stated main ingredients or include fillers instead of including what one thinks they are getting in the bottle. does this book have that information? if not are there other books that do?

this is my first review on amazon, so i too have not written any other reviews. the difference is my review looks and feels real!

Summary: "Smoke Out the Snake Oil Salesmen"

I use this book to keep myself ahead of the often suspect claims made for various ingredients in food products, pills, extracts and compounds either marketed by profiteers or pushed by gushing magazine articles and on TV, radio and the web. We are bombarded with this kind information just about every day and this book offers the kind of reality check one needs to separate truth from fiction.

Just one recent example would be the claims I have been hearing 10 times a day on talk radio for a product called Super Beta Prostate. The PDR tells me that while evidence points to some real relief of symptoms of an enlarged prostate, potential side effects indicate that consultation with a physician is in order. Most tellingly the dosage of the main active ingredient, beta-sistosterol, is twice the maximum dosage in common use by doctors in Europe. This would make it doubly important - literally - to check with your doctor.

I have yet to find anything that has come up in the news like resveratrol, lycopene, anti-oxidants, etc., that is not covered in staggering detail in the pages of this book.

I spent hours in this when I first got it! It's my fave for just getting the SCOOP on whichever nutrient has my attention at the moment
